The Jewish Home Blessing, Birkat Habayit Resource
What is a Birkat HaBayit?
What does Birkat HaBayit mean?
A brakha is a blessing. Bayit is the Hebrew word for home. When combined in Hebrew, we call this prayer בִּרְכָּת הָבָּיִת, or the blessing for the home. The prayer is viewed as a good omen for a new home, and is therefore often given as a housewarming gift.
The meaning behind the verse
Let no sadness come through this gate. Let no trouble come to this dwelling. Let no fear come through this door. Let no conflict be in this place. Let this home be filled with the blessing of joy and peace.
Birkat Habayit is a hopeful, meaningful verse, declaring that no sorrow, trouble, fear, or conflict enter the home in which the prayer appears. It urges that the home be filled with the blessing of joy and peace. The Hebrew text of the prayer is written in poetic, rhyming verse.
Sources indicate that it was often hung as an amulet to watch over a home during times of plague or illness. It has been etched onto various ornaments and decorative items going back at least a hundred years.
Who wrote Birkat Habayit?
There are different theories about the origin of Birkat Habayit. It is usually attributed to late 18th century Hungarian Hassidic Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum. Rabbi Teitelbaum wrote biblical commentaries and was well-regarded for his Kabbalistic knowledge. He is said to have lived in a constant state of yearning for the Messiah. The amulets of protection he created served to safeguard and inspire their bearers.
Why is Birkat Habayit so popular?
Birkat Habayit is one of the most commonly found prayers hanging in the home. It is no mere superstitious talisman. Birkat Habayit is a powerful affirmation that all negative things stay out of the home and the lives of its dwellers. It is a fervent wish that blessing and abundance be ever-present in the lives of those who live in the home. The prayer is meant to empower and protect family members, and the house itself.
Many people find comfort in reading over the words of Birkat Habayit as they pass them on their way in and out of their home. There is something meditative and reassuring about this concise, ancient text found hanging in so many homes around the world. Birkat Habayit is a unique way to bring positive spiritual energy and an overall sense of calm to the home.

Beautiful piece! The only thing to note is there wasn't really a back paper piece (the fancy ones that you can put inside if you want something like that) but for me it was perfect.
